The Importance of Service Learning: Benefits, Ideas, and Resources for Students and Schools

This article is inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and was written on Martin Luther King Day. Here are some teaching and learning resources connected to this National Day of Service.

Service Learning

I work at a pre-k through 8th-grade school that uses the EL Education school model. Part of this structure includes following a set of design principles, one of which is service and compassion. We all plan learning expeditions that have a service learning component.

One of the highlights of my teaching career was during a WWII expedition. My 8th graders wrote and performed a play showcasing the war's different fronts. They sold tickets, served dinner, invited veterans, and even bussed in folks from the local nursing homes. We donated the proceeds to the WWII and Holocaust museums. It was a wonderful experience.

This year, our 8th graders visited Camp American Legion. During the visit, they learned about the camp's history and the services provided to veterans. The camp's mission is to offer veterans and their families a serene location in the Northwoods of Wisconsin for healing and renewal. We helped mark maple trees for tapping in the spring and raised funds back at school to support the camp. Now, we are making cards to be placed in the cabins and coffee mugs that the veterans can use while at the camp. I hope this is the start of a great tradition.

Why Service Learning

Service learning offers numerous benefits to students, schools, and communities. According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, service-learning helps students develop a sense of empathy and compassion as they actively engage in meaningful projects that address real community needs. It enhances their understanding of social issues, promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and fosters a sense of civic responsibility. Service learning also contributes to students' personal and social development, boosting their self-confidence and leadership abilities. Additionally, schools benefit from service learning by strengthening community partnerships, enhancing curriculum relevance, and fostering a positive school climate. Service learning positively impacts communities by addressing local challenges, promoting positive social change, and creating a generation of active and engaged citizens.
