Smells Like Success: Teaching Like Ted Lasso
Our job as educators is to guide, support, and help them reach their fullest potential as they pursue their best version of themselves.
The Power of Potential
I love Ted Lasso, and this particular quote has resonated with me deeply: "I do love a locker room. It smells like potential."
Now, I teach middle school, and if you've ever been in a middle school classroom, you know that sometimes there is a literal potpourri of scents. But beyond the smells, there's something about the metaphorical locker room that I find truly compelling. It's where athletes from different backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses come together to improve and achieve a common goal. This idea of diverse individuals working together and striving for excellence is incredibly promising. In many ways, classrooms are no different.
Embracing Diversity and Potential in the Classroom
This year marks my 26th year of teaching, and over these years, I've been fortunate enough to see many of my students grow up. They have embarked on their unique journeys, built careers, created families, and, hopefully, are out there chasing their dreams. When you step into a classroom, it is jam-packed with potential. Every student has their own unique set of talents, dreams, and aspirations.

Patience and Perseverance
So, consider this a beginning-of-the-year pep talk for both you and me. It’s a reminder that our classrooms are full of potential. However, every student in your room's potential is not always realized at the same time, and you need to have the patience to give that potential time to reveal itself.
