Tell us a little about yourself, including your experience in education/lifelong learning and anything else you’d like to share.
My name is Evan Dupuis. I was born and raised in Kettle Falls, WA (a very small timber and farming community, 1600ish people, in northeast WA about 20 minutes from the Canadian border). I graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2005 with my B.S. in Athletic Training. After graduation, I was fortunate enough to work a season-long Athletic Training internship with the Seattle Seahawks. Following my internship, I worked as a physical therapy aide at a local physical therapy clinic. In July 2007 I took an opportunity to be a graduate assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). While at UTEP I worked with the track and field, men’s basketball and football teams. In July of 2009 I graduated with my M.S. in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. I completed an alternative teaching certification program here in Texas and took a position as a Physical Education Teacher/Athletic Trainer at El Dorado High School. After 7 years at the High School, I transferred over to an Elementary P.E. position to be at home more after the birth of our daughter. I have been at Sgt. Roberto Ituarte Elementary ever since and made El Paso, TX my second home!
What have you learned from someone you know that has made you a better person?
I’ve always remembered what one of the undergraduate professors (Jeffery Kawaguchi, PT, Ph.D, ATC) told us as we began the Athletic Training program at Eastern Washington University. Before he even started teaching our intro to Athletic Training class he said that before we even began he wanted us to go into this program with the mindset of “not letting the books get in the way of our education.” This has always stuck with me and been a cornerstone of my continued personal and professional growth.
What “earned wisdom” do you have that others can benefit from?
I’ve learned in my years to appreciate people who are genuinely themselves and try to practice that myself. “Say what you mean and mean what you say” is wisdom I’ve picked up and try to practice in all I say and do when interacting with people.
What personal or professional development book (or both) would you recommend? Why?
The First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher was the first book I read as a new teacher. Its lessons on classroom management and how that can translate to student success (academically and personally) have stuck with me in my 16 years of education. To this day, I still try to reflect on and practice what is in that book.
What is your favorite song on your morning commute to work?
Boston: More Than a Feeling (my favorite song of all time 🙂)
Danny Gokey: Rise
Feel free to add anything else that you think would be helpful to others.
4 principles I feel we all need reminded of sometimes as life can get hectic:
- We need to try our best to be patient with ourselves.
- We need to try our best and persevere through our daily challenges and not let them derail all the good we have done that day.
- We need to try our best to be genuine in our words and actions towards one another.
- We need to try our best (even though it may be difficult) to choose kindness.
I appreciate you reaching out to me and hope these words can help provide some comfort and direction to whoever may need it. THANK YOU for the support and encouragement you provide to educators. What you do is needed now more than ever 🙂
