The Friday Five
Become a SupporterIt's Friday. My winter vacation is inevitable. Today, we take the 8th graders to our local bowling alley for "Energy Bowlerama." The science lab is followed by good old-fashioned bowling fun. At about 2:00 p.m., I start to decompress and begin the shift into vacation mode.
One of the themes of this week's newsletter is reflection. I hope you check out the annual review template (#3). I've used it for a few years now. It provides perspective for the future and is also a great form of journaling.
Reflection Questions:
- What were your biggest teaching challenges this year regarding student independence versus support, and how did you adapt your teaching methods to address them?
- What strategies do you use to teach students about evaluating online information? What new approaches would you like to implement in your classroom next semester?
- Which areas of your professional and personal development would benefit from regular review and goal-setting? How could you measure your progress in these areas?
1 - Educational Trends and Challenges
Major educational trends in 2024 included finding the right balance between student support and independence, addressing teacher workplace conditions, and determining optimal instructional methods for different learning contexts. Schools faced unprecedented challenges from climate-related disruptions, including extreme temperatures and weather events that affected learning and educational outcomes. Schools focused on finding practical ways to deliver quality education while meeting modern challenges and supporting both students and teachers. What were the significant challenges your school faced in 2024?
2 - Digital Literacy
A Washington D.C. class is teaching 8th graders critical digital literacy skills like lateral reading and source evaluation, with students learning to question information sources and verify claims across multiple websites as part of a University of Maryland-created course on "digital civic inquiry." The program, which is part of a broader movement across nineteen states to incorporate digital citizenship and media literacy into schools, demonstrates that students can quickly learn to spot misinformation when given proper instruction, though they need ongoing support to develop advanced skills like identifying subtle biases. Teachers looking to implement similar programs should integrate digital literacy consistently throughout their curriculum, teach fundamental concepts, and use real-world examples to help students understand credibility and bias.
3 - Annual Review (Free Template)
Regular reflection and annual reviews are powerful tools for educators to track their progress, set meaningful goals, and enhance their professional development. These structured evaluations help teachers assess their accomplishments, identify areas for growth, and create actionable plans for continuous improvement in their personal and professional lives. Implementing a systematic review process while modeling reflective practices for your students can help you better align your efforts with your objectives. 4 - Review Your Life
“In the absence of regular reflection, we move from year to year without celebrating our successes, learning from our failures, and assessing whether what we’re doing in life is what we actually want to be doing in life. Sitting down to review your life, one piece at a time, will uncover hidden lessons and important insights you can take into the next year.” [source]
