Do It For The Action
Here are some recent snippets from my weekly review. Each week, I record what I’ve been thinking, reading, and experiencing in the classroom and in life. Think, Learn, Share, Repeat.
Here are some recent snippets from my weekly review. Each week, I look back and record what I’ve been thinking, reading, and experiencing in the classroom and life. Think, Learn, Share, Repeat.
I'm trying something new this week. I recorded my thoughts while doing yard work and created this transcript summary.
1. Action Over Reaction
The first thing I've been mulling over is the importance of doing things more for the action than for the reaction. As I've been sharing on social media and sending out weekly newsletters, I've been reflecting on the necessity of doing things for the right reasons. Otherwise, it’s just a waste of time. So, I will double down on sharing things for the sake of the action—things that are beneficial for me and might be helpful to others.
2. The Value of Sports
Second, sports are awesome. I've been watching many sports lately because my two children are heavily involved—one in soccer and volleyball, and the other in swimming. We're all over the place, but sports have provided invaluable lessons you can't learn anywhere else. Learning what it feels like to lose, how to be a team player, and understanding that good things only happen if you put in the work are just some of the life lessons sports teach us.
3. The North Woods of Wisconsin
Third, the North Woods of Wisconsin is beautiful, especially as the leaves start to change. It’s my favorite time of the year. Soon, we will have Beef-O-Rama coming up, where people will spend all day cooking beef downtown and parade it through the streets before cutting it into sandwiches. It's quite an event, and if you ever have a chance to visit the Minocqua area in the fall, I highly recommend it.
4. Facing a Creative Block
Fourth, I've been experiencing a bit of a creative block. It’s exciting news, though. I’ve been invited to lead a session on an upcoming professional development day at the high school, focusing on what I've been doing with my Why Edify project. I want to ensure that the session is helpful for teachers and doesn’t come off as self-serving. I aim to make it valuable for attendees while also figuring out what I want to achieve with Why Edify.
5. The Earned Wisdom of Teachers
Lastly, I’ve been thinking a lot about earned wisdom and the imposter syndrome many people, especially teachers, face. I believe any teacher could lead a professional development session to benefit others. I want to encourage people to share their earned wisdom because everyone has something amazing to offer. This concept may become a part of my mission with Why Edify.
Wrapping Up
So, there you have it—my five takeaways from the week. I give myself a solid C for this attempt—if I were in a standards-based school, I'd rate it as a 2 for progressing.
